Andi Drăguşanul: Mântuire / Redemption

Mântuire

Un pahar gol

Plin cu dezordine

Un strop de flux

Ce zdrobeşte umeri:

Acum sunt păcat

Şi am ucis,

Timpul s-a oprit

Cuprins ca un orb la vânare de îngeri;

Cuprins ca un orb la vânare de îngeri;

Redemption

An empty glass filled with disorder,

A drop of tide, crushing shoulders.

Now I am sin, and I have murdered

The time has stopped from going further.

The sense of right, slips through my fingers,

The killer feeds on useless dreamers.

There’s nothing left, the child forgot to pray.

The rivers of passion are running deep,

They say that redemption, well it ain’t that sweet.

I heard there’s no more room for me…

I cut my illusions in the eyes of the strangers,

Engaged, like a blind man in hunting angels.

I heard there’s no more room for me…

Will I be seen?

A child’s dream?

Oh child, why aren’t you praying?

You broke your tools,

For a world of fools.

Oh child, am I worth saving?

The rivers of passion are running deep,

They say that redemption, well it ain’t that sweet.

I heard there’s no more room for me…

I cut my illusions in the eyes of the strangers,

Engaged, like a blind man in hunting angels.

I’m sure there’s no more room for me…

şapte ani vor pluti prin văzduh ca o pânză subţire;

i-am cântărit numai gesturile şi-am rămas într-o carte închis;

Candle Carrier

By some signs I can tell that the coming of the unicorn

is close. I have already locked my door with the podlock, I’m waiting in between sleep and awareness,

the other night I filled the city bunkers with Latin, Latin-extended and special characters,

for seven years they’ll be floating like thin linen in the air;

I’m the only one who could foretell the coming of the unicorn,

Though I will only admit it before my typewriter,

I haven’t confessed to anyone yet, not even to the candle carrier,

I only have made a brief assessment of his movements

and then kept within a book, closed;

how strange that the city people won’t understand anything

but keep surrounding woods and strangling them in their claws,

calcified oaks kissed his feet with some kind of piety

and his wandering bird vanished in the haze,

for seven years he’ll be carrying his bare sky to the birds

in a gigantic dance of the torches, in a prayer,

there will be the unicorn; this very day the ashes start coagulating

and here’s the whole city running for their lives!

Cu înţeleapta-i vorbă strămoşească!

Megalopolis

Unfriendly providence has cursed them all

To stick to our history and kin –

Through all those streets a Babylonian grin –

All foreign cities, languages, name, call.

Mischief keeps spying there with sharpened claws

While „rustics” bring along fruit of their land,

They grasped from harshened soil with callous hand,

To sell, serve, please according to the laws.

Their lordships in the cities walk and talk

Some tongue of theirs, confusing, weird-sounding

And when they argue, „rustics” blench like chalk.

Oh, Heavens… may it come in wrath, astounding,

The old-time wise word, like a tomahawk,

Cleaving through dozy ears, punishing, pounding!

T. Robeanu: Voievodul / The Prince of Moldavia

The Prince of Moldavia

Under quiet vaults of ages, the Moldavian prince is resting,

Reddened, his large hands are lying on his chest in piety,

Over him, lavishly present, his old world’s silently living

Tombstones old, letters erased, quenched candles and a monk

At the head of the bed praying and ignoring simple facts.

That from There, exempli gratia, from the blue, the God is gone.

But at midnight, when the bells mournfully begin to toll

Awake is Moldavia’s prince:

„I will, from my old dead splendour, make my way to the divan1,

Logofat2, get the Moldavian seal back from the museum

And the spatar3 shan’t return from London without my sword!“

But the logofat can’t hear him and his spatar shall not come –

Bare at midnight time, his bones give a pale moonlight reflection.

Traducerea în limba engleză: Ioana Carp

1 (divan) – Council.
2 (logofat) – Moldavian nobleman („boier”) who led the divan in the absence of the prince („domn”).
3 (spatar) – „Boier” who is supposed to be the supreme military leader in the absence of the prince

Constantin Morariu: N-am şovăit / I Would Not Hesitate

Ce bine-i când a-i învăţat,

Trăind, să ştii ce-i a muri

Şi să ai dulcea conştiinţă

Că nu-n zadar ai suferit.

Căci greul drum de suferinţă

Îl laşi de spini mai curăţit

Celor ce au să te urmeze.

Atuncea ei tot mai uşor

Vor încerca să întrupeze

Eternul vis al tuturor

„Viaţa numai în lumină!“.

Duşman de moarte-i e minciuna,

Trăieşte viaţa cea mai plină

Cine-o înfruntă totdeauna.

I Would Not Hesitate…

I would not hesitate, but always

Hardened as steel I’d face my fate,

I’d face hypocrisy in all ways.

Nevertheless, I feel the shade.

The shade that death has cast on me –

All I catch sight of now is blurred.

It’s fine when one – alive – can be

Aware of being deathly hurt.

It feels so sweet to be aware

Of having suffered – not in vain.

Of having left the hard path bare

Of many bitter thorns, of pain,

For all those who will want to follow.

So they can try then to embody –

True to its very self, not hollow–

Th’ eternal dream of everybody.

„Life but in light!“ This is the dream.

The deathly foe – the halves of truth,

Living life to the full might seem

A privilege of audacious youth.
